Depression
You are not alone if you suffer from depression! It is a very common illness that affects millions of individuals in the world. Furthermore, the World Health Organization has written that depression is the leading cause of disability in the world!
Have you noticed that what one of your friends may define as depression is different than what another defines as depression, or what a mental health profession would define as depression.
Depression is different than simple sadness.
Depression symptoms include lack of sleep, loss of interest in activities that you once had interest in, guilt, loss of energy, lack of concentration, loss of appetite, slowing down of the body, and suicidal thoughts.
Depression can be caused by many factors, including the biology of your brain, your cognitive abilities, your gender, other medical conditions that you may have in addition to depression, medications that you are taking, your genetics, and the situations that you are placed in.
There are other forms of depression as well, like major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, post-partum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, along with seasonal affective disorder, and your psychiatrist can assist in diagnosing this conditions as well.
Treatment for depression include psychotherapy, medication, and or a combination of the two. The earlier that you are given treatment for depression, the better the chance of having a recovery and living out the fulfilling life that you deserve.
