What is schizophrenia?
Simply put, schizophrenia is a mental disorder where it is difficult to tell the difference
between what is imaginary and what is real.
Some individuals who are in a psychotic state note that they have visual hallucinations. Some of these individuals are aware that they are hallucinating, and others are not sure if what they are seeing is indeed a hallucination. Many individuals who suffer from psychosis are afraid to tell others that they may be visualizing something that isn't there, but do not disclose this to others out of a fear of being judged or out of a fear of not fitting in. There can be a great deal of frustration, anxiety, and paranoia associated with psychosis and schizophrenia (a chronic psychosis)
This can be a very scary phenomenon, and we at Denver Psychiatry will everything in our power to assist you getting the help you need, through medication management, group therapy, family therapy, job training, and individual therapy.

Let us discuss schizophrenia further. it tends to be diagnosed between the ages of 15-35,
and is a chronic, serious, potentially life debilitating illness.
Schizophrenia can be associated with having faulty beliefs, including having beliefs that are paranoid or bizarre, having hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that are not real), being more isolated, not being able to express oneself in an appropriate manner, or not having the same motivation that one once had. Furthermore, individuals who are diagnosed with schizophrenia can have hallucinations, delusions, agitated body movements, and thought processes that are not "normal". Many individuals who have schizophrenia also have other mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, or substance abuse disorders that coexist with schizophrenia.
